The Grounds

The Heaning Estate stands in five acres of beautiful grounds, including several formal lawns and terraces as well as a wild meadow.The formal garden areas are for the use of the guests of The Big House and comprise a croquet lawn, a hedged garden area dotted with beautiful rhododendrons and azaleas and a rockery area with paths, a slate patio and table tennis table.

The Big House also has a large wraparound terrace with incredible views down the valley to the Howgills, with outside dining and seating areas and large sun umbrellas. The Small House has its own separate garden and patio area with outdoor seating and dining. Each cottage has its own private patio area with bistro table and chairs.

In addition, the Estate has a wild meadow for the exclusive use of guests. Dotted with picnic tables and pagodas, the meadow is seeded with wild grasses and flowers and cut through with paths. Guests use it for picnics, early evening drinks, celebrations, ball games, den building, running races and all sorts of wonderful activities. We never cease to be surprised at their imagination and creativity! The views from the meadow, on the eastern side of the entrance driveway, are spectacular.

To the other side of the entrance driveway lies the Rhododendron Walk, an area reclaimed from a thick and unmanaged coppice of tangled mess. We’ve now opened up the area and replanted it with beautiful bushes that are just beginning to take root and flower, and lined it with benches to stroll and enjoy the spectacular view. For those less inclined to walk up a fell, this little path is a perfect leg stretch.
